At a quarter to midnight on Friday night, she propped up her note to Alistair on the mantel in the library, pulled her hood up, and slipped silently down the side corridor that led to the back door. She had given the footmen the evening off, and the butler had already retired to bed on her suggestion. Mrs Hinchbottom, now occupying the guest chamber upstairs, had been snoring gently as she passed her door earlier.

There was a softly misted moon in the sky but the yard was dark in the shadows of the house. Not so easy to navigate as during the day, and made less so by the fact that she was unfamiliar with exiting the house via the servants’ door.

Halfway across the yard, she tripped over a forgotten pail with a disconcertingly loud clatter of wood on stone.

Biting her lip, Lavinia righted herself, hurriedly brushed down her skirts, then glanced back at the dark house.
